Chatham Borough describes its central business district as a broad mix of restaurants, banks, shops and personal-service establishments. Historic buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries give the Main Street corridor much of its visual character, while the east Main Street commercial area includes older colonial-era structures and professional uses.
Chatham Township's commercial activity is less concentrated than the Borough's downtown, but Shunpike Road has a strong everyday-service cluster. The current 2026 Hickory Square tenant roster includes grocery, pharmacy, paint/hardware, pet supplies, shipping, banking, personal care, fitness, cinema and food businesses.
The Borough advises prospective businesses to confirm that the intended use is permitted by zoning before signing or renovating a space. Businesses must obtain use approval through the applicable Commercial Certificate of Continued Occupancy (CCO) process, and construction, electrical or plumbing work may require permits.
Restaurants and some sidewalk uses have additional municipal and health requirements.
Doing Business in the BoroughThe Township requires zoning approval when a use begins or changes and for many structural/property changes. Commercial construction plans generally must be prepared by a New Jersey licensed architect or engineer, with construction permits obtained when required.
The Township maintains current zoning maps, permit forms, land-development applications and construction guidance online.
Township Forms & ApplicationsChatham Borough's downtown events and Farmers' Market help generate foot traffic for local businesses, while Township shopping centers draw residents from both Chathams and neighboring communities for everyday errands.
Businesses in either Chatham municipality can expand beyond a standard directory entry with paid NJTGO visibility.
